Local History of Herberton, Queensland, Australia

Herberton is a small town located in the Atherton Tablelands region of Far North Queensland, Australia. The town was founded in 1880 as a tin mining town. It was named after Robert Herbert, the first Premier of Queensland.

Tin Mining History

The discovery of tin deposits in the Herberton area in 1880 sparked a rush of miners to the region. The first tin mine was established by John Newell, who discovered tin in the area while searching for gold. Over the next few decades, several other tin mines were established in the area, and Herberton became one of the richest tin mining towns in Queensland.

The tin mining industry brought many new settlers to Herberton, including Chinese, Europeans, and Pacific Islanders. The town quickly grew in size and became a hub for trade and commerce in the region.

Heritage Buildings

Today, Herberton is home to several historic buildings that date back to the town's early days as a tin mining town. One of the most notable buildings is the Herberton Mining Museum and Visitor Information Centre, which is housed in the former Herberton State School building. The museum showcases the history of tin mining in the area, and has exhibits on the geology, machinery, and tools used in the industry.

Other heritage buildings in Herberton include the House of Bottles, which is a house made entirely out of glass bottles, and the Historic Village Herberton, which is a collection of over 50 historic buildings that have been relocated to the site, including a bank, post office, and jail.

Natural Attractions

Herberton is also known for its natural attractions, including the Herberton Range National Park, which is home to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered Mahogany Glider. The park contains several hiking trails, including the scenic Granite Gorge Nature Park.

The town is also located near several waterfalls, including the Millstream Falls, which is the widest single-drop waterfall in Australia.

Today, Herberton is a popular tourist destination, known for its historic buildings, natural attractions, and friendly community.
